

Each dedicated machine runs 20 instances of minigame servers, while each large game gets 5 instances per machine. The server uses two types of dedicated machines: one for small minigames (such as SkyWars and BedWars) and the other for larger games (such as UHC). Hypixel runs a highly modified version of the Spigot server software. On 13 April 2020, it was announced that Hypixel's Minecraft China server would be shutting down on 30 June 2020. On, Hypixel announced that they had partnered with NetEase, the publishers of Minecraft China, to release a version of Hypixel for the game in China. The server reached over 6 million registered accounts and 20 thousand concurrent users before being shut down on 31 March 2016. On 28 October 2015, Hypixel released a Minecraft: Pocket Edition server in alpha which was developed under the codename "Bladestorm". Many more minigames were created after many players started joining the server. They then created small minigames for users to play while waiting to join the main adventure maps the first of which being Paintball.

The two originally created custom Minecraft adventure maps and uploaded them to their YouTube channel before creating the Hypixel server to showcase their creations. Development of the server started around September 2012. Hypixel is the most popular multiplayer server for Minecraft: Java Edition, released in beta on 13 April 2013 by Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette.
